A number of Norton facilities will be closed on Monday in observation of Martin Luther King Jr. Day. Students can take the day off, as classes will not be held. This includes Norton Public Schools, New Testament Christian School and Wheaton College. All United State Post Offices are closed. There is no regular mail delivery/pickup or retail services on postal holidays. Norton Public Library will also be closed, and will reopen Tuesday at 10 a.m. Martin Luther King Jr. Day is considered a bank holiday and most banks will be closed on Monday, including Bank of America. Contact your bank to determine if they will be open Monday. The Tri-Town Chamber of Commerce and United Regional Chamber of Commerce will be closing up shop until Tuesday. …

Columbus Day, observed on the second Monday in October, honors Christopher Columbus' arrival in the New World in October of 1492. According to the History Channel website, "[Columbus] intended to chart a western sea route to China, India and the fabled gold and spice islands of Asia; instead, he landed in the Bahamas, becoming the first European to explore the Americas since the Vikings set up colonies in Greenland and Newfoundland during the 10th century." Power outages may disrupt business hours.
As Norton recovers from Hurricane Irene, many businesses are closed due to power outages. On our Norton Patch Facebook page, Kelly Mulvehill reports that most businesses closed, particularly on Route 123.
