Norton Finance Committee to Hold Public Hearing on Budget Tonight

The Public Hearing is Scheduled for 7:45 p.m.

The Norton Finance Committee is holding a Public Hearing on the FY14 budget tonight beginning at 7:45 p.m. The Finance Committee will also be discussing it's Veteran's Budget. Just last week, Norton Selectmen voted to remain a part of a four-town Veteran's District that includes Norton, Easton, Foxborough and Mansfield.

Middle School Basketball Team to be Honored at School Committee Meeting

Meeting to take place 6:30 p.m. in the Norton Middle School library.

The Norton Middle School girls basketball team, who won the Massasoit League Title, will be recognized at Monday night's Norton School Committee meeting.  The girls beat Westport 27-18 Feb. 14 and went undefeated 18-0 on the season. Also on the agenda, the committee will discuss the fiscal 2014 budget. The Norton School Committee presented their recommended fiscal year 2014 budget of just over $24M Feb. 25, an increase of just under $1.6 million from the fiscal year 2013. Norton Expected to Pay More to Fund Southeastern Voc-Tech

Based on the new proposed budget, Norton will pay slightly more to fund the vocational tech high school in Easton.

Norton residents can expect to pay slightly more to help fund Southeastern Regional Vocational Technical High School, pending the approval of the school’s new budget. Projections show that next year 113 Norton residents will attend the regional school, which is the same as this year.  Norton’s contribution to the school will go from $1,101,026 to $1,158,580, an increase of $57,554. Brockton will contribute the most, providing the school with nearly $3 million of funding. 60.4 percent of the school is made up of students who reside in the nearby city. The school would also like permission to take $200,000 out of excess and efficiency fund. The fund can carry up to five percent of the operating budget and has about $1 million in it now. The …

Voters Approve $45M Budget

Schools to get $23,007,874.

Town voters approved the $45,371,093 fiscal year 2013 budget Monday night, despite some debate over the school and Town Clerk’s portion. Voters went with the Finance Committee’s recommendation of $23,007,874 for the Norton Public School’s operating budget rather than the $22,926,668 supported by Town Manager Michael Yunits. The $81,206 difference came from unanticipated revenue for veteran’s reimbursements. “Our feeling is that over the years the school department has had to take an incredible hit and this year if we could give, we can afford, they should get the increase we are recommending,” said Paul Helmreich of the Finance Committee. “The school needs this money.
