Xaverian Boys Tennis Takes Two From Norton

Hawks move to .500 with pair of wins over Lancers on Friday in Norton.

The first time the boys’ tennis teams from the Xaverian and Norton High Schools met earlier in the season, the non-league match at the Norton Middle School was suspended because of snow, rain, wind and cold. But on a day that featured temperatures some 30 degrees warmer than their first encounter, the Hawks first captured the suspended match, 4-1, and then won the originally scheduled match, 4-1, on Friday afternoon at the middle school. The victories improved Xaverian’s overall record to 4-4. Norton dropped to 2-6 overall with the two losses. However, since the Hawks are a Division 1 team, the defeats don’t count against the Lancers’ record as far as tournament qualification goes. “The kids did a good job dealing with the heat,” said …

Norton Boys Track Remains Undefeated

Lancers improve to 4-0 with impressive home win over TVL foe Medway on Tuesday.

The Norton High boys’ outdoor track team continued the terrific start to its season, remaining undefeated with an impressive 110-26 victory over Medway in a Tri-Valley League meet on a warm Tuesday afternoon at Adams Field. The victory improved the Lancers to 4-0, the team having opened the year with wins over Dover-Sherborn, Holliston and Bellingham. It was the third time that they have surpassed 100 points, having scored 108 against the Raiders and 104 against the Blackhawks. The Lancers swept four events on Tuesday, including the 400-meter hurdles, the 100 meters, the 200 meters and the javelin. Norton won 15 of the 16 events overall, jumping out to an 18-0 advantage and later taking leads of 44-6, 68-9, 76-10 and 90-14. “It was an …

Norton Boys Tennis Looking For Successful Season

Lancers will need to replace five seniors from last year’s squad.

After losing five seniors from a year ago, the Norton High boys’ tennis team will be looking for constant improvement this spring and hopes to be in position to contend for a postseason berth by season’s end. Last spring, the Lancers finished the season with a 7-13 overall record and a 4-12 mark within the Tri-Valley League. It was a rough start to the campaign for Norton, beginning the season 1-10, but the team bounced back to win six of its final nine matches to finish at 7-13. The Lancers lost five seniors to graduation from last year’s squad. Topping that list is captain Kevin Fisher, who was Norton’s number one singles player last spring and was named to the Tri-Valley League All-Star Team. Number two singles player Peter Danko has …

Senior Leadership Key To Success of Norton Boys Basketball

Seven-member senior class guides Lancers to excellent 2010-11 campaign.

You can’t have a successful season without terrific senior talent and leadership. And that is exactly what the Norton High boys’ basketball team possessed this winter. The seven-member senior class helped lead the Lancers to a 15-win regular season and a third-place finish in the ultra-competitive Tri-Valley League. The seniors played major roles in Norton securing its fourth consecutive postseason appearance this winter and its third straight first-round tournament home game. During the four years the seniors were in the program, the Lancers won a total of 59 games, which was an average of close to 15 victories per season. Unfortunately their Norton careers came to an abrupt halt a week ago when the Lancers dropped a tough 56-52 decision …

Spartans use big fourth quarter to outlast Lancers on Wednesday night.

The Bishop Stang High boys’ basketball team went on a run of nine consecutive points in the fourth quarter and then held on to knock off Norton, 56-52, in the first round of the MIAA Division 3 South Sectional Tournament on Wednesday night at the Lawrence Larocque Gymnasium. The loss ended the season for the eighth-seeded Lancers at 15-8 overall, while the ninth-seeded Spartans improved to 13-6. Bishop Stang advances to the quarterfinals and will travel to Medway on Friday night. The Mustangs, the top seed in the section, improved to 18-3 with a 59-50 home victory against 17th-seeded Hanover (11-11) on Wednesday. Norton Boys Basketball To Face Test In First Round Of Tournament

Lancers to host talented Bishop Stang team on Wednesday in Division 3 South Sectional.

The Norton High boys’ basketball team will see a mirror image of itself when the Lancers face Bishop Stang during the first round of the MIAA Division 3 South Sectional Tournament. Much like the Lancers, the Spartans have excellent guard play, a dominant big man and a couple of sharpshooters from the outside. Bishop Stang, the ninth seed from Dartmouth, will travel to the Lawrence Larocque Gymnasium for a first-round game with eighth-seeded Norton on Wednesday night at 7. The Lancers will enter the game with a 15-7 overall record, while the Spartans are 12-6. Bishop Stang finished in third place in the Eastern Athletic Conference this winter, behind only league champion Martha’s Vineyard and Bishop Feehan. Bishop Stang, coached by Joe …

Martha’s Vineyard Uses Second-Half Surge To Beat Norton Boys

Lancers complete regular season at 15-7 after loss to Vineyarders on Wednesday.

The Norton High boys’ basketball team faced a couple of challenges during its trip to Martha’s Vineyard for a non-league game on Wednesday afternoon. First off, the hosts would be looking for revenge after the Lancers had earned an exciting and hard-fought 56-53 win over a talented Martha’s Vineyard team two weeks ago at the Lawrence Larocque Gymnasium. Second, it was Senior Night for the Vineyarders with their three senior standouts, multi-sport star Randall Jette, Ben Ciciora and T.J. Van Gerven, each playing their final regular season game at home. But Norton had overcome those two hurdles in the first half, holding a commanding 19-point lead at the break, 38-19. Unfortunately, then came the second half. With a 19-point lead and looking…

Norton Boys Basketball Combines Good Defense And Offense For Win

Lancer win streak at four games with home victory over Westwood on Tuesday.

The Norton High boys’ basketball team earned its fourth consecutive victory with a 65-52 win over Westwood in a Tri-Valley League game on Tuesday night at the Lawrence Larocque Gymnasium. With the victory, the Lancers improved to 12-5 overall and 10-5 in the league. Winners of six of its last seven games, Norton currently sits in third place in the TVL. But the league race got much more interesting after Hopkinton went into Medway on Tuesday night and handed the Mustangs a 56-47 loss. The win broke the 33-game TVL winning streak for Medway and pulled the Hillers into a first-place tie. It was a terrific turnaround for Hopkinton, who had dropped a tough 72-53 decision to Medway on January 7 in Hopkinton. The Mustangs are now 13-3 overall …

Defense Carries Norton High Boys Basketball To Win, Girls Lose

Lancers bounce back from loss in Hopkinton with terrific defensive effort.

It was back to the basics for the Norton High boys’ basketball team during its Tri-Valley League game with Ashland on Friday night. After surrendering an average of 70 points during their previous two games, the Lancers reverted back to their defensive excellence, holding the Clockers to just 43 points during a 52-43 victory at the Lawrence Larocque Gymnasium. The victory improved Norton’s overall record to 9-5 and moved the team to within two victories of securing a berth in the MIAA Division 3 South Sectional Tournament. The win also allowed the Lancers to move into third place in the Tri-Valley League. Medway continues its reign atop the league standings, owning a 12-2 overall record and a perfect 12-0 TVL mark. Hopkinton is second at …

Norton Boys Basketball Defeated By Medfield Warriors

Lancers lose 50-42.

It is often said that foul shooting wins or loses games for basketball teams. Norton High School boys' basketball coach Marc Liberatore was a firm believer of that testament after his Lancers' 50-42 loss to Medfield Wednesday.  "I thought defensively we did a pretty good job, fouling them was not good," said Liberatore. "They went 16-of-19 from the foul line, we were 5-of-6 so there's the difference in the game." The game was low scoring throughout and showcased both teams' defenses – but it was Medfield's effort down the stretch and in the critical stages of the game that netted the Warriors the eight-point victory.  "They're zone defense held us to 42 points so great job by them," Liberatore said.  Norton (6-4,5-4) took its first and …
