Grenade Found in Norton Home Friday

Device deemed inactive by bomb squad.

A grenade was removed from a Norton home by Norton Fire Department and the State Police bomb squad Friday morning. A resident at 160 E. Main St. called Norton Fire Department at about 10:49 a.m. after finding a grenade in his garage. Upon arrival at the scene, the department called the State Police bomb squad, who x-rayed the device and determined it to be inactive. Inactive grenades are not considered dangerous. “It couldn’t explode if you wanted it to,” said Norton Fire Captain Kent Campbell. Fire and State Police officials cleared the scene at 11:31 a.m.

Suspect In Wheaton Bomb Scare Arrested

Norton Police detectives arrested Nicholas Barnett, 19, of West Simsbury, CT, in connection with the suspicious device discovered under the Peacock Pond bridge.

Tonight Norton Police detectives arrested Nicholas Barnett, 19, of West Simsbury, CT, in connection with the suspicious device discovered under the Peacock Pond bridge at Wheaton College on Tuesday, Dec. 7. Norton Police and Fire Departments and Massachusetts State Police Bomb Squad and the State Fire Marshall's Office responded to the report. Wheaton Public Safety informed responders that two students observed the device and reported it to them. Students and faculty received an e-mail notification of the incident. Norton Police received information during the course of the investigation with Wheaton Public Safety that led to Barnett, who is a student at the school. Norton Fire, Police And Bomb Squad Respond To Report Of Suspicious Package

Device emitted sparks, several campus locations evacuated.

At 1 p.m., Norton Police and Fire Departments and Massachusetts State Police Bomb Squad and the State Fire Marshall's Office responded to Wheaton College for a report of a suspicious device. Wheaton Public Safety informed responders that two students observed the device and reported it to them. Students and faculty received an e-mail notification of the incident. The device, which Wheaton Public Safety officials said was emitting sparks, was located underneath a walking bridge over Peacock Pond. The pond and bridge are located a short distance from East Main Street at the front of the college. Chase Round Dining Hall, Meneely and Watson Fine Arts were evacuated, but are now back open.
