PHOTO GALLERY: Norton High School Art Show

Students submit over 1,000 pieces.

Students from all levels of art submitted over 1,000 pieces of work for the Norton High School Art Show that took place Wednesday, May 2. All year long, everyone who has taken an art class this year built up their portfolio of work for the occasion. The Art Honor Society helped set up the make-shift gallery in the high school cafeteria.  "I'm very proud of my students," said art teacher Robin Lewicki. "I love the show. It's a lot of work, but it's worth it. It's a big night for the kids." To see a sampling of the art on display, scroll through the photo gallery above.

My daughter Emily had a piece in the show so we went together. Since she is a first year student, this was our first time at the Art Show and we were blown away! Norton has amazingly talented students who obviously have really gifted and passionate teachers because the show was spectacular. The town of Norton should be proud of these students. I'd like you to consider having some of the artwork …   more ›

PHOTO GALLERY: Art Program at Daggett-Crandall-Newcomb Home Inc

Seniors thrive under direction of Ben Macomber and Sue Talavera.

Thanks to former art teacher Ben Macomber and activities director Sue Talavera, seniors at Daggett-Crandall Newcomb Home can exercise their motor skills by painting. The program launched in the beginning of the year, and seniors at the nursing home have already showed that they have not lost the ability to create beautiful works of art. Residents in their 80s and 90s thrive during the program. "When they're painting, they can do whatever they want," Talavera said. "They haven't lost their independence." With each session, Macomber gives the class a theme. He will show the class an example of his own art, and give them simple instructions on how to recreate the painting and make it their own. Macomber has been working with different art …

Norton High Painted Tiles to Go Digital

Current and former students will soon be able to claim their tiles.

Two Norton students have worked to preserve one of Norton High School’s legacies, the painted ceiling tiles. Every year for at least the past three decades, seniors paint a ceiling tile at the school, leaving a little bit of themselves behind for future students to look upon as they stroll through the halls. But with the impending renovation and addition, the tiles will have to be removed and replaced to make way for new heating and sprinkler systems. Rob Butler and Jared Marvel, both 18, are digitally preserving the ceiling tiles and murals one by one as their senior project. The senior project is part of an elective course designed to benefit the community in some way. Butler thought of the project based on a conversation he had with …

Norton Middle School Students Unveil Mural [VIDEO]

First mural at the school.

This year at Norton Middle School, several students worked hard to turn an ordinary wall into a beautiful, eye-popping mural. The piece was unveiled Monday night at a School Committee meeting. “It was totally created by the students,” said art teacher Sally Greer. Back in October Greer was approached by assistant principal Ronnie Goldstein, who wanted to do something positive for the school and brighten it up. Together they thought of a mural. They used some plywood and made a frame. Greer told her art classes about the mural. Many ideas were submitted by the students, and between Greer, Goldstein and Mr. Michael Kramer, they chose the winners who could pick a friend to help paint. Artists selected were eighth-graders Hannah Patalano, …
