Change in liquor license would control outside alcoholic beverages from being brought in.
The Norton Country Club on Oak Street has been a model citizen for many years, with its welcoming greens and clubhouse. But a few abutters had concerns Thursday, after owners had applied to selectmen for a change in the club’s liquor license. Put succinctly, homeowners whose property is immediately adjacent to the playing course were a little worried that alcohol available on the vending cart might result in a few rowdy players whose golf etiquette already leaves a lot to be desired. Owner Jeff Carroll of Northeast Golf Properties told selectmen he is trying to establish more control over the use of alcohol on the course, particularly when golfers bring in their own supplies. Mayor Thomas M. Menino announced that the City of Boston, in partnership with Horizon Beverage Company, who will soon be moving to Norton, Patrόn Spirits, Clear Channel Outdoor and the Association of Independent Colleges and Universities in Massachusetts (AICUM), is increasing its support of the national “We Don’t Serve Teens” campaign during the August and September back-to-school period. The “We Don’t Serve Teens” initiative is sponsored by a coalition of public and private sector organizations, including the Federal Trade Commission (FTC). The City of Boston’s support of this U.S. House of Representatives and Senate recognized program began in January and marks the first time that a municipality has utilized the “We Don’t Serve Teens” …

Seven teenagers were arrested early this morning, Saturday, March 26, for seatbelt violations and possession of alcohol. At 1:19 a.m., Norton Ptlm. Christopher McCarthy stopped a Gray Nissan Altima on W. Main Street in the Area of the Yelle Elementary School for a defective equipment violation. The vehicle was operated by Mollie Lane, 19, of Hanover. Officers discovered the vehicle to be overcrowded with no occupants wearing seat belts. The vehicle is a registered five-passenger vehicle and the vehicle contained seven passengers. Officers removed all passengers and discovered a large amount of alcohol inside the passenger compartment of the vehicle. Officers further determined that all occupants were under 21 years of age. Norton Police Ptlm. Rachel Samuelson and Ptlm. Thomas Durden stopped a Blue Toyota Highlander on East Main Street at approximately 12:46 today in the area of the police station for a defective equipment violation. The vehicle was operated by Gerald O’Neil, 18, of Charlestown. Officers discovered the vehicle to be overcrowded with a total of 14 occupants. Officers removed all passengers and discovered a large amount of alcohol inside the vehicle. Officers further determined that all occupants of the vehicle were under 21 years of age. All occupants were placed under arrest and charged with minor in possession of alcohol and seatbelt violations. All were later released and will appear in Attleboro District Court on various arraignment dates…

As nice as this may sound, how about if these establishments - JUST DON'T SERVE TEENS! The laws are on the books already! ENFORCE THE LAW! This is a problem that could easily be controlled if the current laws were ENFORCED and those serving minors were PROSECUTED - not just slapped on the hand as they usually are.
