All-alcohol license for a restaurant will increase from $1,500 to $1,650.
Selectmen recently voted to hike fees for some licenses in town by 10 percent, after a volley of back and forth arguments over several meetings, for and against greater increases. Board members tossed around a variety of scenarios that proposed different increases for different kinds of licenses, but finally decided an across the board even increase for alcohol licenses would be fair and easily understood. Nearby communities, they reasoned, generally charge more than Norton, but the town wants to retain as many businesses as possible, so holding back on big increases could encourage restaurants and package stores to come into town, or to stay. The Massachusetts State Police will operate a Sobriety Checkpoint this upcoming weekend in Bristol County. "The purpose is to further educate the motoring public and strengthen the public’s awareness to the need of detecting and removing those motorists who operate under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs from our roadways," a press release from the Massachusetts State Police and Colonel Timothy P. Alben, Superintendent of the Massachusetts State Police, read. "It will be operated during varied hours, the selection of vehicles will not be arbitrary, safety will be assured, and any inconveniences to motorists will be minimized with advance notice to reduce fear and anxiety." Change in liquor license would control outside alcoholic beverages from being brought in.
The Norton Country Club on Oak Street has been a model citizen for many years, with its welcoming greens and clubhouse. But a few abutters had concerns Thursday, after owners had applied to selectmen for a change in the club’s liquor license. Put succinctly, homeowners whose property is immediately adjacent to the playing course were a little worried that alcohol available on the vending cart might result in a few rowdy players whose golf etiquette already leaves a lot to be desired. Owner Jeff Carroll of Northeast Golf Properties told selectmen he is trying to establish more control over the use of alcohol on the course, particularly when golfers bring in their own supplies. Mayor Thomas M. Menino announced that the City of Boston, in partnership with Horizon Beverage Company, who will soon be moving to Norton, Patrόn Spirits, Clear Channel Outdoor and the Association of Independent Colleges and Universities in Massachusetts (AICUM), is increasing its support of the national “We Don’t Serve Teens” campaign during the August and September back-to-school period. The “We Don’t Serve Teens” initiative is sponsored by a coalition of public and private sector organizations, including the Federal Trade Commission (FTC).
