Editor's Note: The following is part of a special "end-of-the-year" series in which local editors from your nearby Patch towns highlight their favorites in various topics. Ben Paulin - Editor, Walpole Patch "The Dark Knight Rises" was my favorite movie of 2012. I love all three movies in the trilogy, and while the "Dark Knight" was my favorite of the three, "Dark Knight Rises" was a close second. It was action packed and Bane was a great villain. Jeff Sullivan - Editor, Mansfield Patch "Seven Psychopaths." There were a lot of great movies this year, and they all catered to a specific demographic/genre. "Twilight" was for hopeless romantics, "The Avengers" was for geeks, "Lincoln" was for history buffs and "Les Miserables" was for …

Editor's Note: The following is part of a special "end-of-the-year" series in which local editors from your nearby Patch towns highlight their favorites in various topics. Jeff Sullivan - Editor, Mansfield Patch David Byrne and St. Vincent - "Who." I'm a sucker for baritone saxophones, what can I say? If you haven't checked out this song, you should. It's a rocky dance number with amazing vocals from both Byrne and St. Vincent. Dan Libon - Editor, Wrentham Patch "Take a Walk" by Passion Pit marked the return of one of the best bands to come out of Boston in recent memory. With an upbeat song about financial struggles and trying to make it, Passion Pit once again proved that even the most serious of issues can be expressed with an …

Editor's Note: The following is part of a special "end-of-the-year" series in which local editors from your nearby Patch towns highlight their favorites in various topics. Jeff Sullivan - Editor, Mansfield Patch "Death of Kings" by Bernard Cornwell. If you want historical fiction, Cornwell is one of the greatest writers of all time. You thought Stephen King wrote a lot? Cornwell has written 53 books since 1981. King has written 55 since he started writing professionally since the 1970s. Anyway, the book is about the death of King Alfred the Great during the Danish invasion of England circa 899 AD. You might ask why care about Alfred, well, any town with the name "-borough" after it owes its monicker to him. He started building "Burhs," …

Editor's Note: The following is part of a special "end-of-the-year" series in which local editors from your nearby Patch towns highlight their favorites in various topics. Kelly Glista - Editor, Norwood Patch I have to pick two, because I have a “classic” choice and a more modern one. First of all - “It’s a Wonderful Life.” I know it’s an easy pick, but it really is one of those holiday films for me that never gets tired. My second pick is “The Family Stone.” I won’t lie, I watch it every holiday season and I cry every time, but it’s a beautiful story with a lot of fun and heartwarming moments – without being too overly cheesy. Dan Libon - Editor, Wrentham Patch "Die Hard." It takes place on Christmas Eve and that's good enough for me! …

On behalf of the Norton Parks and Recreation Department, we would like to thank the community for participating in a fun family night this past Sunday at our Festival of Lights. The turnout was tremendous, due to the warmer weather. We would also like to thank our sponsors: North Easton Savings Bank, Roche Bros. Supermarkets and Honey Dew Donuts. Without their support this event would not be possible. Also a big thank you to Santa and Mrs. Claus, Bob Kimball, Master of Ceremonies; Tim Brown, singer; The Norton Singers, Rev. Bernie Hinkley, Trinitarian Church; Junior Girl Scout Troop 80443 and their leaders Mrs. Sandy Ollerhead and Mrs. Erin Brennan for being Santa’s elves; Orsi Photographers; Jett Jam Entertainment; Norton Community Lions…

Even in the toughest of times, the human spirit never fails. Just this past weekend, I was honored to attend a variety of events around my district where the generosity of our friends’ and neighbors’ time, talent and resources was on full display. In Foxborough, the Annual BIT school fundraising event saw a turnout of 400 parents, school administrators, and supporters. Simultaneously, parents in Mansfield were doing the same good work for their elementary schools. Both events are run by extraordinary volunteers, primarily hard-working mothers, who spend months planning and finding new ways to earn additional dollars for their children and are largely successful. Thank you. I also joined the Mansfield Pop Warner Awards Night this …

The Norton Parks and Recreation Department would like to thank the entire community for coming out and supporting our largest yearly event – the 20th annual Chartley Halloween Parade. This year, the parade’s 20th anniversary, was another huge success (despite the rain)! First and foremost, we have to thank Ribeiro Enterprises for (once again) sponsoring the parade, so that we can continue with this wonderful tradition. We would also like to thank the Norton Police and Fire departments, the Norton Honor Guard, and the Norton Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) for all of their help. In addition, thank you to the Attleboro and Plainville Police and Fire departments, and the Bristol County Sheriff’s department, the Norton Board of …

Joe Kennedy III, a 31 year old with no qualifications and very little experience in business or politics is a candidate for the 4th Congressional District. Sean Bielat, a Marine reserve officer and small business CEO with a proven track record of success and personal integrity is also running for this seat. Sean’s resume, charisma and economy – driven positions on fiscal responsibility would make him a heavy favorite in most congressional races across the country. That being said, we are in Massachusetts, where there is a belief, however illogical, that a candidate’s name outweighs a candidate’s qualifications. As familiar as voters might be with the Kennedy name, those same voters are as equally unfamiliar with his positions on many …

Letter to the editor from State Representative Jay Barrows.
Dear Editor: I’m writing to express my full support for the re-election of U.S. Senator Scott Brown. Scott represents an independent voice for Massachusetts in Congress. I can personally attest to his sound judgment, great character, and bipartisan attitude from our time working together at the State House. Now, more than ever, we need leaders in Washington who are prepared to deal with not only the economic issues facing this country but the military ones as well. As a Lieutenant in the National Guard, Senator Brown has the background and the specific knowledge we need as our country faces a more turbulent international climate. Incredibly impressive to me, both personally and professionally, is Senator Brown's attentiveness to the …

To the editor: During the October 29th Fall Town Meeting Norton voters will have a unique opportunity to complete a process started 26 years ago. In 1986 the Town of Norton purchased the Norton Reservoir from the Wading River Reservoir Corporation for the purpose of preventing the Reservoir from being drained and then developed for commercial use. The goal also was to restore it for regional recreational use for everybody. A vote for a citizen's petition to purchase Pheeny's Island will almost complete the protection of the Reservoir, a municipal treasure that secures open space, protects wildlife, and expands recreational opportunities. The 500+ acre Norton Reservoir was created in the 1860s by damming the Rumford River for fire …
