Wheaton Women's Basketball Falls To Oneonta State In Championship Game

Lyons lose 57-49 in Cheryl Warren-Powers '95 Memorial Tournament

The Wheaton College women's basketball team was dealt a 57-49 loss by Oneonta State in non-conference action in the championship game of the Cheryl Warren-Powers '95 Memorial Tournament on Sunday afternoon at Emerson Gymnasium.

Junior guard Melissa McLaughlin (Spindale, N.C./R-S Central) earned All-Tournament Team accolades for the Lyons scoring seven points, grabbing four boards (all offensive) and one steal. In the first round of the tournament, McLaughlin notched five points, six assists, three rebounds and one steal in Wheaton's 70-30 victory over Lesley University.

Sophomore forward Abbie Brickley (Sandy, Utah/Skyline) and sophomore guard Kenzie Kuhn (Glenwood Springs, Colo./Glenwood Springs) tied for the team-high in points with nine. Brickley added four rebounds (one offensive), three assists, one steal and one block while Kuhn shot 3-of-6 from long distance, gathered two rebounds, dished out five assists and swiped two steals.

The Red Dragons received double-digit scoring efforts from three players, shot 46.2-percent overall and caused 20 turnovers off of steals in the contest to bump their record to 2-1 on the season.

Junior guard Grace Schilling (Northport, N.Y./Northport) posted a game-high 14 points on 6-of-9 shooting from the field, a perfect 2-for-2 from the free throw line, one rebound, two assists, one block and seven steals. For her efforts, Schilling was named to the All-Tournament Team.

Classmate Kristin Pappalardo (Mahopac, N.Y./Lakeland) tallied 13 points going 5-of-14 from the perimeter and a team-high 3-of-8 from long distance. Pappalardo also contributed three rebounds, four assists, two blocks and tied Schilling for the game-high in swipes with seven. Pappalardo garnered Most Outstanding Player honors for the tournament compiling 31 points, five assists, eight rebounds, two blocks and eight steals in two games (65 minutes).

Freshman guard Bryn Loomis (Norwich, N.Y./Norwich) rounded out the double-digit performers for Oneonta State with 12 points (5-of-8 from the field/2-for-2 from beyond the arc), one assist and one steal.

Both teams shot 50-percent or better in the first half with the Red Dragons claiming a slim 36-31 lead at the end of the first stanza. Wheaton jumped out to a 10-2 run in the early going as Brickley dropped in four points and Kuhn canned a three-pointer to jumpstart the offense for the Lyons.

Oneonta State responded with a 14-6 run over the next six minutes and 35-seconds to even the score up at 16-all. After the Lyons elected to call a timeout, the Red Dragons continued to click offensively pushing its biggest lead of the half to eight points on two different occasions.

Freshman guard Lyteshia Price (Liverpool, N.Y./Liverpool) connected for a three-point basket at the 4:08 mark (29-21) and junior guard Alyshia Crawford (Oxford, N.Y./Oxford Academy) swished a jumpshot at 3:36 to make it a 31-23 contest. The Lyons closed the deficit to 33-31 with 20-seconds remaining as Kuhn drilled a three-ball on a handoff by Brickley near the right wing. Junior guard Kelly Mulligan (Pearl River, N.Y./Pearl River) capped the scoring in the first half with a three-pointer of her own on a feed from Pappalardo with four seconds left.

In the second half, both squads cooled down offensively as Oneonta State shot 30.8-percent from the field while Wheaton checked in at 15.4-percent from the perimeter. The Lyons outrebounded the Red Dragons 28-14 in the second stanza but committed 14 turnovers. Oneonta State led by as many as 15 points with 7:57 remaining on a Loomis jumper and held a double-digit lead from 11:41 to 3:04 in the half. Wheaton trimmed down the gap to eight going on a 5-0 run to end the contest.

Wheaton (1-2, 0-0 NEWMAC) hosts Mount Ida in non-conference action on Sunday, November 25 in Emerson Gymnasium at 4:00 p.m. Oneonta State (2-1, 0-0 SUNYAC) travels to Utica College on Monday, November 26 with tip-off scheduled for 7 p.m.
