Norton Wrestling Sweeps Opening Meet

Varsity wins against Norwell 58-13, Nauset 70-12 and Taunton 66-15.

In their opening day of competition, the Norton Lancer wrestlers left no doubt that they will be an exciting team to watch this season when they won all three of their meets in a home quad on Saturday. The defending league, sectional and D-3 state champions crushed Norwell 58-13, Nauset 70-12 and Taunton 66-15.

Led by senior captains Jack Cuneo and Stephen Hudson, nine Lancers went 3-0 on the day including seniors Brett Pike and newcomer Tim Casagni, juniors JT Taylor, Branden Pike and co-captains Myles McAlpine and Mike Travers, plus sophomore Elliott Johnson. Ahrayah Saintius, a junior, had two wins as did freshman Keyshawn Harris and Ryan Gill, while sophomore Russell Hansen, new to the team this year, picked up his first victory as a Norton wrestler.

The Lancers won an impressive 34 matches during the three rounds of competition, losing only eight. This performance bodes well for a team that many thought would be rebuilding this year and boosts the team's winning streak to 18. John Royle, one of Norton's captains last year and a two time sectional champion and state runner-up has been a big help to veteran coach Pat Coleman preparing the team.

The Lancer JVs played an important role in the team's success on Saturday, electrifying the gym with a resounding win prior to the start of the varsity competition winning 13 of 19 matches, 11 by pin. Jacob Burgess, Adrian Sokolowski, Scott Albert, Connor Merriott, Adam Marcon and Lucas Lavallee all won matches while Grant Monast won two and Anthony Cardone won three.  Such a fighting spirit is the hallmark of Norton's JV program under the direction of coach Chris McCarthy. The JV Lancers will strive to continue their winning ways this season after two consecutive undefeated seasons.
