Norton Wrestlers win Middleborough Tournament

B Team takes home sixth place.

Coming off an impressive second place finish in the 32 team Marshfield Tournament earlier in the week, the Norton High wrestling team was regarded as the clear favorite to win its third title at the13 team Middleborough Tournament and the Lancers did not disappoint. Norton won by a margin of nearly 60 points taking championships in five of the 14 weight classes.

In addition, Norton's "B" team (each school could enter two wrestlers per weight class) took sixth place honors, the highest finish of any "B" team and ahead of eight of the varsity teams entered.

Norton's point total of 269.5 was well ahead of runner-up Nauset with 207 and third place Oliver Ames with 186. Weight class champions for the Lancers included Brett Gallagher (120 lbs.), Cam Hale (132), John Royle (138), Scott Coleman (145) and Steve Hudson (220).

This was Coleman's fourth consecutive Middleborough title. Gallagher, Royle and Hudson each pinned all of their opponents.

John Norton (126) and Tony Giglio (160) took second place honors while Ahrayah Saintius (113), James Cuneo (152), Jack Cuneo (170) and Matt Pelletier (195) all were third.  Rounding out the team scoring, Jared Marvel (132), Branden Pike (145), Myles McAlpine (152) and Mike Travers (160) were fourth.  Elliott Johnson (182) and Alek Donovan (220) were fifth, Brett Pike (138) was sixth and Rob Butler (170) and Brandon Deal (285) were seventh.

The Lancers will be back on the mat Wednesday at home against Tri-Valley League rival Bellingham Blackhawks.  The undefeated Norton JVs get things started at 6:15 p.m. with the varsity meet starting 7 p.m.  On Saturday, Jan. 7, the Lancers host Sharon, Hingham and Somerset in a quad meet starting at 10 a.m.
