Norton Middle School Basketball Split Finale

The boys beat Seekonk 42-39 but the girls fell 22-17.

The basketball teams wrapped up their season at home against the Seekonk Warriors. The result was a split decision that saw the girls’ team fall 22-17 while the boys held off a lingering Seekonk team end the season with a 42-39 win.

In the girls’ game the Warriors slowly but surely built up a 12-4 lead with 1:44 to go in the half but a basket by Sara Coffey and another one from Sarah Jarbeau at the buzzer cut the lead to only four at half time.

The Lancers came out strong and tied the game at 12 to continue the 8-0 run from the first half. The Warriors regained the lead but Maddie Murphy (6 points, eight rebounds) tied it up again.

That would be as close as the Lancers would get. The Warriors ended the game with an 8-3 run. The Lancers were as close as three with a little over a minute to go, but couldn't get the shots to fall.

In the second game of the day, the boys found a little more success than the girls. Despite only winning by 3 points, the Lancers boys never trailed at any point in the game, but there were plenty of times when the score was tied.

The boys quickly jumped out to a 7-0 lead, but the Warriors chipped away at it to tie the score. The Lancers maintained a 2-4 point lead for most of the half and led by as much as 10. The Warriors cut down the lead, but Lancers remained ahead at the intermission, up 21-17.

Keeping the Lancers ahead was Nick Botehlo. Playing down low, Botehlo was clutch in producing key rebounds and baskets for the Lancers. He ended the game with 24 points and nine rebounds.

The Lancers and the Warriors continued to battle for the rest of the second half. With 28.8 seconds left in the game and the Lancers up by one, the Warriors had a chance to win, but a deflection out of bounds gave the ball back to the Lancers. A putback by Botelho off a missed free throw locked up the game as the boys ended their season with a 3-point win.

The girls end the season at 18-4 while the Boys are 17-5.
