More Things Change, the More Deutsche Bank Championship Stays the Same

On the Professional Golf Association's tour, change is a familiar thing as courses, sponsors and sites switch around.
When you're taking about the Deutsche Bank Championship at the Tournament Player Club of Boston in Norton, though, it's a different.
After changing constantly in the first couple of years, the second stop on the FedEx Cup has gotten into a successful routine.
Even when Deutsche Bank makes a change, it's usually a minor one.
Take the new guy at Deutsche Bank, CEO of North America Jacques Brand, for example. While Brand is in a new position, no stronger to the event. He has been spending his Labor Day Weekend in Norton for years and now moving into a host role.
Brand said his family has strong links to New England. His three sons and his wife have made spending Labor Day weekend in Norton a tradition.
"I've been thrilled to be part of this tournament for many years," said Brand. "In 2006,  (my son, Jacob), was very lucky enough  to caddy as part of Vijay (Singh's) foursome. He was the height and weight of Vijay's bag."
Brand asked Jacob, who is now 6'4," to stand up in the crowd to show how much he has grown.
Deutsche Bank has been the title sponsor since the first event in 2003.
"It really begins with 100 of the great players in the world coming here in order to compete and be part of the FedEx Playoff," said Brand. "What's really exciting for Deutsche Bank, is that there is a lot of activity that happens off the course as well. We're really proud we have been able to raise $24 million for the Tiger Woods Foundation and many local children charities. The tournament also has an economic benefit of over $600 million to the New England region."
Another constant had been the Tiger Woods Foundation, which benefits from the tournament.
Wedged in between the pennant races in baseball and the start of the football season, the Deutsche Bank Championship has found its niche in the local sports world and on television. The tournament is still the only one with a scheduled Monday finish.
First round play will start Friday, Aug. 30 and end Monday, Sept. 2.
