Men’s Track & Field Opens Up 2012-13 Season At Southern Maine Invitational

Olagundoye places second in two events for the Lyons

The Wheaton College men's track & field team opened up its indoor season with several strong individual performances at the University of Southern Maine Invitational in the Costello Field House on Saturday afternoon. The invitational, which featured seven schools and several unattached runners, was a non-scoring meet.

Junior Olufunsho Olagundoye (New York, N.Y./Cushing Academy)posted a pair of second place finishes in the 55-meter dash and the 200-meter dash. Olagundoye ran a time of 6.77-seconds in the 55-meters and 22.98-seconds in the 200-meter dash. Olagundoye qualified for the 55-meter dash finals with a time of 6.50-seconds in the preliminary heat.

The Lyons also had some top performances in the distance events as freshman Alexei Spinu (New Cannon, Mass./New Cannon) finished second overall in the 1,000-meter run in 2:34.63.

In the 3,000-meter run, Wheaton took second, third and fourth place overall. Sophomore Harry Bachrach (Chestnut Hill, Mass./Beaver Country Day) ran a time of 9:24.22, classmate John Green (Quincy, Mass./North Quincy) crossed the finish line in 9:28.16 and seniorMichael Richard (Chicopee, Mass./Holyoke Catholic) rounded out the group with a time of 9:34.11.

Senior Sam Fear (Bath, Maine/North Yarmouth Academy) placed second in the high jump clearing 6-feet and 0.25-inches.

In the 600-meter run, freshman Sam Miklovich (Gray New Gloucester, Maine/Gray New Gloucester) ranked fifth overall with a time of 1:31.08.

Sophomore Ben Sharma (Lexington, Mass./Lexington) finished third overall in the 55-meter hurdles in 8.41-seconds. Sharma qualified for the finals with a prelims time of 8.20-seconds.

Freshmen Jonathan Sproule (Trenton, Maine/Mount Desert Island) and Conner Bourgoin (Winslow, Maine/Winslow) placed fourth and fifth, respectively, in the one mile run. Sproule ran a time of 4:53.50 while Bourgoin checked in at 5:38.00.

Wheaton returns to action on Saturday, January 12 at the Yale Invitational at 9 a.m.
