The Wheaton College women's volleyball team had its Senior Day spoiled by visiting Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI) on Saturday afternoon, as the Lyons dropped a 3-0 (6-25, 17-25, 23-25) decision during New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) action in Emerson Gymnasium.
With the loss, Wheaton finished its season at 10-22 overall and 2-7 in the league, while the Engineers advance to next week's NEWMAC Tournament at 19-8 and 5-4.
Senior Rachel Vergara (Needham, Mass./Needham) finished with six kills for the hosts, while freshmen Kendall Jacobs (San Diego, Calif./Scripps Ranch) and Deirdre Wilson (Aptos, Calif./Aptos) added five and four, respectively.

In the opening set, the Engineers turned a modest 6-4 lead into a quick 18-5 advantage before scoring the contest's final seven points on the strength of Beovich's service.
Wheaton hung around in the second set, as eight ties ensued between the teams, including at 13-all. However, WPI took a 17-13 lead and didn't look back.
The Lyons led for the bulk of the third set, including holding a 17-11 advantage, but the Engineers responded and knotted the contest at 18. Five more ties transpired before a Wheaton service error and Sarber kill completed the WPI sweep.
