School Committee Quick Notes for Jan. 9 Meeting

Science lab dedication, high school building project update.

While more detailed stories will be posted throughout the next couple of days, here is a quick blow-by-blow on what happened at Monday night's School Committee meeting.

  • Tanya Benoit made a proposal to dedicate one of the new science labs to be built at Norton High School to be named after teacher Peter Leddy who recently passed away. Her proposal was approved.
  • Heather Albritton gave an update on the DECA competition, in which 33 medals were awarded to Norton students. The next competition is in March.
  • Albritton also gave a proposal for a new course, called Fashion and Retail Merchandise. Other course proposals were for American History Through Music and honors classes for Spanish and French levels 2 and 3. They were all approved.
  • An advertisement for a new superintendent was sent out a few days ago, and one resume has already been received. The next Superintendent Search Committee meeting will be held Tuesday, Jan. 12.
  • The School Committee discussed the Capitol Improvement plan for the next few years. Some needs will be addressed in Town Meeting, and the Committee also hopes to get a grant from the MSBA. Items that need attention as soon as possible include a new roof and air conditioners for J. C. Solmonese, a new special education mini bus and kitchen equipment replacements.
  • The material costs are still being trimmed down by the Norton High School Building Committee. While they are still deciding the order of alternate needs, they are now getting to the aesthetic aspects of design, such as choosing furniture. The project is a few weeks behind due to the sewer component and groundbreaking may not start in early March as planned. Members noted, however, that time may be saved along the way to still make the deadline goal.
  • Lastly, it was reported that Norton Public School staff raised and donated $438 on Dress Down Day for the Norton Energy Fund. The money will be used to help heat homes for families in need.

Tune in at 2 p.m. for a story on the dedication of a science lab to Peter Leddy who recently passed away.
