School Committee Approves Budget for Next Year

Committee also gives update on school building project.

Last Monday, the School Committee approved a budget of $23,235,958.34 to be put forward for next year.

This is an increase of $724,000 over last year. This figure was sent to Town Manager Mike Yunits and the Finance Committee.

“We are hopeful it will be approved so we can avoid layoffs and program cuts,” said School Committee chairwoman Beth McManus.

McManus said that all is going up to speed with the Superintendent Search and Norton High School Building Project. In fact, the groundbreaking ceremony will be held Friday, March 2 at the main entrance. The opening reception will begin 12:30 p.m., with the ceremony beginning at 1 p.m. An optional tour will follow.

Earlier last month, the committee thought the process would be delayed due to EPA approvals that were needed for the septic system.

At the meeting the committee also paid their respects to Christine Condon, the former adjustment counselor at J. C. Solmonese Elementary School. Condon retired last year due to illness.

Last but not least, the Norton High swim team was in attendance to discuss all their accomplishments this year.
