Norton High School Evacuated Thursday

A reported smell of gas in the building prompted evacuation.

Norton High School was evacuated Thursday for an hour due to the reported smell of gas in the building.

According to Kevin O'Neil, chairman of the high school building committee, the evacuation was "project related." Students were moved to the Yelle School at 12:45 p.m. and allowed back into the high school at 1:45 p.m. after the fire department inspected the area.

"The cause of the smell was due to testing going on with the new rooftop heating units and one backfired and some exhaust was pulled into the school through the ventilation system," O'Neil wrote on the Pride of NHS Facebook page Thursday afternoon. "Everything is fine now, and after school activities are running normal."

O'Neil went on to say that all parents were notified via an Alert Now phone message and the committee will look to prevent the incident from happening again in the future.
