New Testament Christian School Staff receive CPR/First Aid Training

Shawn Simmons of Norton Fire Department helps train teachers on emergency preparedness.

Recently, the faculty and staff of New Testament Christian School attended a day-long course in CPR and First Aid held at their New Taunton Avenue location.

“We feel it is very important to equip our faculty and staff with the tools to administer emergency aid when needed,” said principal Lynne Brennan.

“It was quite a sight to see all of us on our hands and knees breathing life into our practice dummies," added kindergarten teacher, Susan Ferris. “Many of us have been through the CPR class in the past but it was a great refresher, as certain aspects of CPR have changed.”

Brennan enlisted the services of Norton firefighter Shawn Simmons, who educates the public on emergency preparedness. Although the Norton Fire Department is only 3 minutes away from New Testament Christian School, the possibility of the emergency vehicles being out on multiple calls is very real.

“We want to be proactive rather than reactive in our emergency planning. Our faculty and staff are with our students daily, but also have much involvement with the various communities in which they live. We want to enable our staff to be of help anywhere they might be if the need arose,”  Brennan said.

The school has participated in past years with the Town of Norton first responders in a simulated disaster drill. Additionally, New Testament Christian School maintains a short wave radio station (NT1CS) and provides training for students and interested staff members to earn ham radio operator licensing.  Ham radio operators can often play an important role during disaster situations.
