JCS Students Get Fired Up About Reading

Reading incentive program kicked off.

Nearly 500 students have been given the goal of reading 2,013 books in a month as part of the Get Fired Up About Reading program at J. C. Solmonese Elementary School.

The program kicked off Friday, March 1 and ends April 5. For every three books a child reads, they log their progress and drop it into a box for their grade level. In return, students will receive postcards from a dragon and will be entered in a book raffle each week. Horace Mann Insurance also donated two Kindles to give away.

"This program increases excitement about reading, and that's what it's all about," said program organizer and teacher Julie Gill-Dooley.

Dooley, along with Rosemary Spaulding and Gia Sunderland got dressed up in their best wizarding attire and told the story of the travelling dragon. If students make their reading goal, he will return in a culmination event April 12.
