Cannon Agreement Finalized in Norton

The Board of Selectmen has finalized the agreement between the American Legion and the Town of Norton for a German cannon.

The cannon, a relic of World War I, was originally offered to the town’s Historical Commission by the Legion when they found they did not have the membership to sustain a location in Norton.

The Historical Commission couldn’t take the cannon, as their membership provides their liability insurance and would not be able to fund the extra coverage needed for a cannon.

“The Board of Selectmen have custody,” said selectmen chair Robert Kimball. “We’d install it and mount it on a concrete pad.”

The cannon will be displayed on the town common facing Pine Street. The American Legion stipulated in their agreement that if they ever regain enough membership they would want to have the option of taking back the cannon.

“They refurbished the entire cannon about three years ago,” Kimball said.
