Updated: J.C. Solmonese Elementary Placed on Lockdown Thursday Morning

The lockdown has since been lifted. A 48-year-old Attleboro woman was cited as a result of the incident.

Things are back to normal at J.C. Solmonese Elementary School after the school was placed on lockdown Thursday morning for approximately 10 minutes.

The Norton Police Dept. reported on its Facebook page that the school was placed on lockdown because of a suspicious woman trying to enter the building.

"JCS was in lockdown due to a suspicious person trying to get into the building," the message stated at approximately 11:30 a.m. "Female subject stated she had to use bathroom and tried several doors. Police are on scene with suspect. The school did a good job with the proper procedure and notification to prevent admittance to the school."

Norton Police Liutenant Todd Jackson said the lockdown was self-initiated.

"The lockdown was the result of a woman, later identified as Christine Ayres, age 48, of Attleboro, attempting to enter the school, reporting that she needed to use the restroom," said Jackson in an email message. "After a brief discussion with the school principal, Ayres continued her attempts in gaining access to the school.  Ayres returned to her vehicle before running back toward the school, acting in a suspicious manner.  School staff immediately initiated a lockdown and notified police.  When officers arrived on scene, they spoke with Ayres and verified that there was no threat to school students or staff."

Jackson said nobody was hurt in the incident and no weapons were used. He also praised the school staff for its response.

Ayres was not arrested, but will be cited, he said.

"Ayres was not placed under arrest, but will be charged by Norton Police with disturbing the peace and disturbance of a school assembly," he said.
