Early Morning Accident Results in 120-Gallon Fuel Spill on Highway

Dump truck collided with tractor trailer on Route 495 North.

Safety officials responded to Route 495 North for an accident involving a 10-wheel dump truck and tractor trailer early this morning.

At approximately 1:49 a.m., a dump truck part of a construction crew entered the highway and made physical contact with a tractor trailer traveling along the route near exit 10. In a press release, Norton Fire Department Captain Kent Campbell said the fuel tanks on both of the vehicles were ruptured, and over 120 gallons of diesel fuel spilled onto the highway.

“Luckily there were no injuries,” Campbell said.

The tractor trailer came to a halt in the high speed lane while the dump truck ended up in the breakdown lane. Traffic was diverted between them in the middle lane. Both vehicles were eventually towed.

Contractors from the construction site noted that they would hire Clean Harbors to clear up the spill.

Norton Fire Department, Massachusetts State Police, the Department of Environmental Protection and the Massachusetts Highway Department were on scene for three hours before it was cleared.
