Norton, Massachusetts: Looking Back at a Century Ago

The first dance under the direction of the 1911 Norton High School Class was held at the Town Hall last night with great success. The hall decorations were orange and black. A reception was held in the early evening and the invited guests, numbering about 150, met the members and their teachers. The proceeds will go to augment the Washington trip fund.

The Young People’s Guild met last evening with Miss Kitty Payson. The following officers were chosen for the ensuing year: President, Rev. Adolph Rossbach; first vice President, Florence Dorr; treasurer, Arthur Valentine; executive committee, Mrs. Walker, Miss Payson, and Reginald Marvel. Committee appointed Sunday School to assist in the Christmas Exercises.  Mrs. Walker, Miss Payson and Mary Walker voted that the Guild should give $10 towards Christmas expenses.

George E. Smith and daughter Dorothy spent today in Boston and this afternoon attended “Carmen” at the Boston opera house.

Miss Linda Ducharme of Oakland has been a recent guest of Miss Linda Gegenheimer.

Mrs. S.A. Gifford of New Bedford who has been visiting Mrs. James B. Snow Jr., has returned to her home.

The Dorothy Dix Club held its regular monthly meeting at the home of Mildred Smith this afternoon.

Mr. and Mrs. Charles F. Smith and son were in Providence, Saturday.

Fred Willis of Taunton was in town Friday evening and attended the reception and dance of the Norton High School seniors.

The Church Aid Alliance will hold its monthly social and literary meeting at the Unitarian vestry. Thursday afternoon, Dec. 7.  Subject: “Missionary Trip”  Mrs. C.A. Ratcliffe. The hostesses will be Miss Ella M. Barker, Mrs. George E. Smoth, Mrs. J.W. Jenkins and Mrs. B.B. Scanlon.

O.T. Mitchell and family have moved to Attleboro and Fred French has moved his family into the tenement recently occupied by Mr. Mitchell.

Arthur Whipple is suffering with a severely lacerated thumb.

E.C. Pike of this place, who about a week ago entered the Soldiers Home in Chelsea, died there yesterday at the age of 70.  Mr. Pike has been in poor health for some time. He leaves two children, Mrs. Edgar of Chartley and Charles Pike of Easton Norton. Funeral arrangements will be made later.

Mrs. George Sawyer will entertain the Social Whist Club at her home on Main Street tomorrow evening.

Mr. and Mrs. Will Bryant and two daughters, Ruby and Ruth, of Brockton, who have been spending a few days with Mrs. Bryant’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. George Shaw, returned home yesterday.

On Friday evening will occur the election of offices of the Norton Grange.

Milton Alger of Howard Street was the guest of Alden Walker and family last week.’

Home Stevens of Vermont has accepted a position as a conductor on the Norton & Taunton Railway Company.

Miss Gertrude Heartz of Woburn, who taught music in the public schools last year was in town last evening and attended the reception and dance of the senior class of  Norton High School.
