Philip Dion, 93, a lifelong resident of Norton, passed away surrounded by his family Thursday, Dec. 13, 2012 in the home he was born in Norton.
Born in Norton June 2, 1919, he was son of the late Excas and Victoria (Hammel) Dion.
Philip grew up in Norton and was educated in Norton schools. During World War II, he proudly served his country as a member of the United States Army. He was honorably discharged from the service Dec. 13, 1945 with rank of Technical Fourth Grade.
Prior to retiring, Mr. Dion was employed for over 15 years with the Norton Water Department. He had previously worked for many years at the former Defiance Bleachery in Norton.
A communicant of St. Mary’s Church in Norton, Philip treasured the times spent working on the family farm in Barrowsville.
He enjoyed the simple pleasure of relaxing at home, and spending time with his nieces and nephews and their families. He was affectionately known to his family as “Uncle" and will always be remembered for the kind ways in which he treated animals.
Philip is survived by many nieces and nephews, including his niece Marcia Godfrey and her children David Godfrey and family of Norton, with whom he resided and Sean Godfrey of Minnesota. He was pre-deceased by his siblings.
Private graveside services with military honors will be held at the convenience of the family in Stephen’s Cemetery in Attleboro. Visiting hours are omitted and those wishing may remember Philip with a donation in his memory made to the Community Visiting Nurse Agency, 10 Emory St., Attleboro, MA 02703.
