Obituary: Ernestine Libbey Locke

Wheaton College graduate died July 25.

Ernestine Libbey (Kresser) Locke, 97, of Charlestown and Fairhaven, died Wednesday, July 25, 2012 at Sancta Maria Nursing in Cambridge.

She was born in Boston, daughter of Philip P. and Sally Libbey Kresser, and step-daughter of Helen Bennett Kresser.

Ernestine was a graduate of Girls' Latin School, a member of the Class of 1938 at Wheaton College, and a Katie Gibbs girl. She held many professional positions as librarian at Oberlin College, Mt. Ida College, the Morrisville (PA) Library and the Millicent Library (Fairhaven).

She was predeceased by her husband, Joseph B. Locke.

She is survived by five children: Sally Walker (Colorado), Joanne Letsinger (Indiana), Susan Cranston (New York), Peter (Pennsylvania), Stephen (Charlestown); 12 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren, and 1 great-great grandchild, and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.

As requested, she was cremated and the family will hold a Rite 1 Mass at St. John's Episcopal Church at 27 Devens Street, Charlestown MA 02129 at 11am on Saturday, 8 September, followed by a celebratory wake at the Mt. Vernon Restaurant, 14 Broadway, Somerville MA 02145 in the John Henry function room from 12:30 - 4pm. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Ernestine's memory to the Millicent Library Archives, Box 30, 45 Centre Street, Fairhaven MA 02719.
