Obituary: Charlotte W. Hardenbergh

Charlotte Witter Hardenbergh, who graduated from Wheaton College, died Friday, Oct. 12.

Charlotte Witter Hardenbergh, 94, died Friday, Oct. 12 in her home on Hilton Head Island.

She was born July 31, 1918 to Dr. Orin Russell Witter and Gertrude Hunt Witter of West Hartford, Conn. She graduated from the Emma Willard School in Troy, N.Y. and Wheaton College in Norton. She was a former member of the Junior League of Hartford, Conn.

Charlotte was predeceased by her husband of 59 years, Thomas Sykes Hardenbergh, and her two brothers Russell Hunt Witter and Orin Curtis Witter and his wife Marion Kane Witter.

She and her husband lived in Wellesley for 27 years where they were members of the Wellesley Congregational Church. Charlotte also did volunteer work at the Friendly Aid and the VNA. They retired to Hilton Head Island, SC in 1969, were members of the Bear Creek Golf Club and she volunteered at the Hilton Head Hospital for many years. They moved into The Cypress in 1992. They summered in Wolfeboro, N.H. for over 40 years and were long time members of the Kingswood Golf Club.

Charlotte leaves two sons Frank E. Hardenbergh and his wife Ann and John W. Hardenbergh and his wife Jini both of Wolfeboro, N.H; her grandchildren Jyl Marden and her husband Jay and Erik Hardenbergh and his wife Holly, of San Francisco, Calif. and Brent Hardenbergh of Somerville; and her great- granddaughters Emmy Marden and Ivy and Olive Hardenbergh.

A memorial service will be held at the Cypress of Hilton Head Clubhouse at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Volunteers in Medicine Clinic, 20 Palmetto Parkway, Hilton Head Island, SC 29926-3764. The Island Funeral Home and Crematory is in charge of arrangements.
