Remembering Dorothea H. (Grund) Schissler

Dorothea H. (Grund) Schissler, age 104, of Norton passed away peacefully on Tuesday, January 14, 2014 at the Epoch Senior Healthcare in Norton. She was the beloved wife of the late Edward H. Schissler who died on March 26, 1985.

Born in Cambridge, MA on October 25, 1909 she was a loving daughter of the late Albert Grund, Sr. and the late Hedwig (Ott) Smith and her husband George.

Dot grew up and was educated in Watertown and Norton, and was a 1927 graduate of Norton High School. She had made her home in Norton for most of her life.

In addition to being a dedicated homemaker to her adoring family, Mrs. Schissler had worked in the Public Relations Dept. at Wheaton College, and when younger had been employed as an office worker at the former General Plate in Attleboro which was later to become Texas Instruments.

Dot was an active member of the Trinitarian Congregational Church in Norton and along with her late husband, were founding members of the Norton Historical Society.

She was a former member of the Order of the Eastern Star in Attleboro and had formerly volunteered her assistance during Red Cross blood drives and at the Sturdy Memorial Hospital in Attleboro.

On December 17, 2009 she was the recipient of the Boston Post Cane Award which is presented to the oldest living resident of the Town of Norton. Dot was also an avid Red Sox fan and enjoyed spending time with family and friends alike.

She was the devoted mother of Rick Schissler and his significant other Janet Flaxington of South Attleboro and the late Craig E. Schissler and Jeffrey E. Schissler. She was the dear sister of the late Albert Grund, Jr. and Alfred Grund. She is also survived by her loving nieces and nephews, Terry Grund, Kristy Gomes and Gay Rounds all of Norton, Judy Roberge of Southington, CT and Henry Schissler, Jr. of Cheshire, CT, as well as her step granddaughters, Jennifer Benoit of Pawtucket and Kimberly Benoit of North Carolina.

Funeral services, to which relatives and friends are cordially invited to attend, will be held on Monday, January 20th at 11:00 A.M. at the Norton Memorial Funeral Home, 19 Clapp St. (Off Route 140, Taunton Ave.) Norton. Burial will follow in the Norton Center Cemetery, Norton.

Visiting hours will be held on Sunday, January 19th from 1:00-3:00 P.M. at the Norton Memorial Funeral Home.
