Norton Public Library to Boost Technology Use

Library to use email, texting, automated calls and e-readers like Kindle.

Norton Public Library will be replacing phone notification with email, text messages, or automated telephone calls. This is to alert patrons to items available for pickup at the library or items which are overdue. Patrons will be able to choose the type of notification they prefer.

The transition from phone notification is expected to streamline circulation functions and improve service. In addition, these new options are environmentally friendly and cost-effective as they are provided by the SAILS Network at no additional cost to the library.

Starting June 14, 2012 Norton Public Library will be asking patrons to visit the library or its website to complete a contact form indicating how they want to be notified. The new service is expected to begin by mid to late summer.

The library will also be lending e-reading devices to patrons beginning July 1, starting with an Amazon Kindle. The library’s Kindle is pre-loaded with books including bestsellers, non-fiction and classics.
Downloading to the device is not permitted.

Norton residents 18 or older with a valid SAILS library card in good standing are eligible to borrow e-readers. Borrowers will be required to sign a user agreement. The device will circulate for up to two weeks, with no renewals. Over the course of the summer, the library will also be circulating a Nook Color, Amazon Kindle Fire and an Apple iPad 2.

The Norton Public Library is providing these devices to our patrons so that they may become familiar with these new technologies.

To learn more about borrowing an e-reader, or if you have your own device and wish to learn about borrowing e-books from the library, contact Information Services Librarian Amanda Viana at 508-286-2695 to schedule an appointment.
