Norton High Graduate to Ride for Best Buddies Foundation

Michael Marsolais seeking to raise $1,550.

Michael Marsolais graduated Norton High in 1997 and has been in the military ever since. This June he will be coming back to Massachusetts to do a 100-mile bike ride for the Audi Best Buddies Foundation, and he needs your help.

Marsolais must raise $1,550 for the event. So far, he has raised about $1,045.

According to the organization’s website, the mission of Best Buddies is to establish a global volunteer movement that creates opportunities for one-to-one friendships, integrated employment and leadership development for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities. To further support this movement, they will hold this running and biking event June 2. It will also include a concert by the Plain White T's, lobster bake and party at the finish.

“This is my very first event,” Marsolais said. “So it is a little daunting.”

Marsolais will be riding with his brother, Gene. Together they plan on completing the ride in under five hours. They will be riding in about 30 mile increments and taking five minute breaks at designated stop areas.

The 33-year-old, decided he wanted to take on this challenge because of his cousin, Susan. She was born with Downs Syndrome.

“She is the sweetest person I have ever met,” Marsolais said.

Marsolais is currently stationed at Fort Benning, Georgia as a drill sergeant.

“This is one of the most important things I have ever done,” Marsolais said. “Being in the military I have spent vast amounts of time away from my family. So the opportunity to take part in this event means so much to them.”
