Norton Health Officials Eager for End of Mosquito Season

Though mosquito season is coming to a close, area health officials are still being cautious after a report of a confirmed eastern equine encephalitis death in Plymouth County. 

"The past few weeks we have been lucky and not had any positive mosquitoes," said Norton health agent Leon Dumont. "A hard frost can't come soon enough."

The state cannot do any ground or aerial spraying due to the lower temperatures. The temperature has to be above 50 degrees for ground spraying and 62 degrees for aerial spraying.

"We are still strongly recommending that everyone curtail their dusk to dawn activities," Dumont said.

All the 351 communities in the state are at least at a moderate risk of EEE. In Norton, the risk for EEE and WNV was raised to "High."  West Nile Virus (WNV) was initially discovered in Norton in August.

To date, the state has had 19 human cases of WNV and seven human cases of EEE, according to the Massachusetts Department of Public Health. The fourth case of EEE was confirmed by the DPH Thursday, according to Boston's Channel 7 News.
