The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration regulations mandate that all holders of a Commercial Driver's License inform the RMV division of the type of business for which they operate, whether interstate or intrastate, and if they are required to hold a US Department of Transportation medical certificate.

Drivers who do have the medical certificates will need to provide a copy to the RMV; failure to do so before Jan. 30 will result in the loss of the CDL, MassDOT stated.

Those drivers who have already self-certified, however, will not need to do so again until the expiration of their US Department of Transportation medical certificates, and those who are required to provide a copy of their medical certificates will need to provide a new one upon each expiration.

Drivers can check the status of their self certification on the RMV website.

MassDOT said that most CDL holders are able to complete the transaction within five minutes so long as they have their license information handy, as well as their US DOT medical certificate and whether they are required to carry one. If they are required, drivers will need to scan the certificate on their computers as a PDF or JPG file to upload to the RMV.
