Norton Destination Imagination to Showcase in Tennessee

Norton Destination Imagination’s high school team called the Super Sidekicks placed first at the state tournament at Worcester Polytechnic Institute in Worcester last Saturday. The team led by team manager Betty Saccocia achieved first place for the community service challenge called “Pitch and Play”. This team consisting of Olivia Saccocia, Nancy and Casey Holmes went onto the state tournament after receiving first place at the regional tournament at Whitman Hanson High School. In addition to receiving first and moving onto the Global Finals, this team received the prestigious DaVinci award for creativity.

Joining them at the state tournament at WPI was the Yelle Elementary team called the Explosive YoLo’s led by Jill MacKay. This team included Lily MacKay, Jake Minicucci, Rocco Tarantino and Zach Kohnen and competed in the technical challenge called “Dig In”. The Explosive YoLo’s competed against 7 other teams in this challenge and received third place.

Destination Imagination is a creative problem solving program that has existed in the Norton Public schools since 2004. The program has been self funded with support from the school’s PTA’s, the school department and the Norton Cultural Council.

The Norton High School team will join 44 other states and 14 countries to showcase their challenge in Knoxville, Tennessee in May. The team will be fundraising in the next month for their trip.
