Enjoy the Ride...

I guess these thoughts are triggered by the upcoming graduation festivities that the month of May brings with it.

LIFE.

I was thinking about my children, something most of us parents do – all the time…  But, my thoughts this time led me to thinking about what advice I would someday give my children as they entered adulthood. I guess these thoughts are triggered by the upcoming graduation festivities that the month of May brings with it. Wheaton College seniors and Norton High seniors will soon be graduating. Just the beginning of a new adventure for the young… It is certainly an exciting time.

I remember when I graduated from high school,  I was so full of vim and vigor – ready to take the world head on. I remember being filled with  all sorts of “saving the world” notions  (and I did a little- I guess).  I think youth is the time to try new things, embrace the opportunities and the enthusiasm that is the essence of being young.  The years of “ignorance is bliss” is truly what defines these young people and inspires them.  Funny, how we as adults (a bit wiser and twice bitten) still attempt to protect our young from what we know can happen throughout this crazy ride called Life. In some aspects we probably do more hindering then helping – finding that we are a bit too discouraging at times. We refrain from encouraging them – in fear that our fledglings will be hurt, or worse….

On my own children's graduation day,  I think I would like to hand them off their baby books, their first art projects and a book of pictures from when they were young and in love with only their mom and dad…. But these things, although sentimental, would be of no use to them. What I really should do is hand them a guide book, and I think I would like the inscription on the cover to read as follows"

“This book is a guide -- A guide for life. Written by people who have “been there/done that."  This guide book was created for YOU – Designed by the individuals who know where you come from, who you are and how your genetically hard wired… You can look at this guide as a “Whether you like or not” book of advice  -- written in the hopes of inspiring, clarifying, comforting and even making you laugh a little. Keep it close, refer to it often and --- Enjoy the Ride…..”
