Schools to get $23,007,874.
Town voters approved the $45,371,093 fiscal year 2013 budget Monday night, despite some debate over the school and Town Clerk’s portion. Voters went with the Finance Committee’s recommendation of $23,007,874 for the Norton Public School’s operating budget rather than the $22,926,668 supported by Town Manager Michael Yunits. The $81,206 difference came from unanticipated revenue for veteran’s reimbursements. “Our feeling is that over the years the school department has had to take an incredible hit and this year if we could give, we can afford, they should get the increase we are recommending,” said Paul Helmreich of the Finance Committee. “The school needs this money. It doesn’t come close to funding what they actually need. They have got …

On May 12, local communities across America will be asked to join the U.S. Postal Service and its letter carriers to combat one of this nation’s growing problems — hunger. The Norton Postal Office will be taking part and making the donations to the Cupboard of Kindness. About 50 million Americans — including 17 million children — now live in families that lack sufficient food. The Postal Service, the National Association of Letter Carriers (NALC), Campbell Soup Company, Feeding America and other partner organizations are working together to collect food donations May 12. It is the nation’s largest single-day food drive in local communities across America — including Puerto Rico, Guam and the Virgin Islands. Now in its 20th year, the Stamp …

Norton clean again.
Volunteers at the first Keep Norton Beautiful town-wide cleanup day overfilled a 130-yard compactor, and needed even more space, selectmen reported Thursday. And in addition to at least 275 registered volunteers, members of the highway department donated their Saturday to the event, driving trucks around to pick up bags left at the roadside by the many groups, teams, and individuals who pitched in. “It went off without a hitch,” said Mary Steele. She commented she herself was picking up across the street from a local convenience store, and ended up bagging countless discarded lottery tickets. “They are making money on this trash, and we are picking it up,” she said. Steele suggested the board get the message out that businesses who …

Town meeting 7 p.m. May 14 in Norton Middle School auditorium.
Town Manager Michael Yunits is offering a few changes to the upcoming Norton town budget, proposing to reduce the Town Clerk’s raise and add to the staff of the communications department while reducing the town’s donation to the school department. The total town budget stands at $48,309,794 using the finance committee’s most recent recommendations, Yunits told selectmen Thursday. The budget includes an unanticipated $162,000 in revenue for veteran’s reimbursements. He said he wants to reduce the Town Clerk’s proposed 29 percent raise, as recommended by the finance committee, to one percent, a reduction of $13,067. Yunits and selectmen had discussed the fact that because the Town Clerk still remains an elected position, neither he nor the…
