PHOTO GALLERY: Norton High School Art Show

Students submit over 1,000 pieces.

Students from all levels of art submitted over 1,000 pieces of work for the Norton High School Art Show that took place Wednesday, May 2. All year long, everyone who has taken an art class this year built up their portfolio of work for the occasion. The Art Honor Society helped set up the make-shift gallery in the high school cafeteria.  "I'm very proud of my students," said art teacher Robin Lewicki. "I love the show. It's a lot of work, but it's worth it. It's a big night for the kids." To see a sampling of the art on display, scroll through the photo gallery above.

My daughter Emily had a piece in the show so we went together. Since she is a first year student, this was our first time at the Art Show and we were blown away! Norton has amazingly talented students who obviously have really gifted and passionate teachers because the show was spectacular. The town of Norton should be proud of these students. I'd like you to consider having some of the artwork …   more ›

The Phenomenon Known as Dubstep

Journalism assignment by Norton High School student Kendyl Cutler.

Dubstep is a genre of electronic dance music that has been getting popular. It originated in South London in the early 2000s and was played mostly in dance clubs. DJs that make dubstep music have started to get a lot more recognized. It’s not wildly popular, but it’s getting there. Radio stations have started slowly releasing it on the air. Popular rap and pop artists have started incorporating it in small amounts as dance breaks in their songs. It’s more for the young adult age groups from about 15 to late 20s. If you like interesting, robotic sounding, dance music, than you’ll love dubstep. There are also gatherings and concerts that include not only dubstep, but techno and dance music as well. Concerts and gatherings are the best ways to…

Timmy Brown performs at 'American Idol Experience.'

Norton native Timmy Brown recently moved to Florida to follow his dreams of becoming a country music star and is already making a splash at Disney Hollywood Studios where he auditioned for the American Idol Experience. The show allowed him to sing to a live audience and the chance to win a ticket that will allow him to go to the front of any audition line for next season’s American Idol. “I will be going back and also auditioning for ‘Idol’ this summer for next season no matter what,” Brown said. “It is just a good experience and helps me with learning all the staging and helps me with learning how to perform on a big stage.” Brown has performed at many events in and around Norton such as at Norton High School's athletic events, First …

Book Review: Basketball Junkie

Journalism assignment by Steve Burrill of Norton High School.

"Basketball Junkie" is a memoir on Fall River’s own Chris Herren, a small town hero who possessed the skills to make it to the NBA. Growing up in a troubled house hold, Herren tells us what it was like to basically have the world on his shoulders, or so it seemed. Herren tells us in great detail all the trouble he used to get into during his high school years, and how his brother was his role model. The book offers an interesting viewpoint of his parents, who were more concerned with his performance on the basketball court than his academic performance. The book is great for high school kids, and specifically for student athletes, who definitely can empathize with Chris’s struggle to perform on the basketball court and make everyone happy…

PHOTO GALLERY: Art Program at Daggett-Crandall-Newcomb Home Inc

Seniors thrive under direction of Ben Macomber and Sue Talavera.

Thanks to former art teacher Ben Macomber and activities director Sue Talavera, seniors at Daggett-Crandall Newcomb Home can exercise their motor skills by painting. The program launched in the beginning of the year, and seniors at the nursing home have already showed that they have not lost the ability to create beautiful works of art. Residents in their 80s and 90s thrive during the program. "When they're painting, they can do whatever they want," Talavera said. "They haven't lost their independence." With each session, Macomber gives the class a theme. He will show the class an example of his own art, and give them simple instructions on how to recreate the painting and make it their own. Macomber has been working with different art …

Movie Review: 'We Bought a Zoo'

Journalism assignment by Norton High School student Micayla Valeri.

Recently I saw the movie, "We Bought a Zoo." "We Bought a Zoo" is an amazing movie about a family who lost their mom and wife. They then decided they needed a change in their life and moved into a new house. Come to find out, it is not a normal house; it’s a zoo. It is a very touching movie; it made me laugh and it made me cry, but most of all, it made me smile. I would recommend this movie to everyone! "We Bought a Zoo" is Rated PG and is 124 minutes long. It is available for rental on Netflix and Redbox.

Brian Latu, of Norton, a sophomore at Boston College High School, along with 84 other members of The BC High Concert Choir, recently performed at Carnegie Hall in New York City.  In the weeks leading up to the Carnegie Hall performance, Latu and his fellow singers were asked to come to school at 7 a.m. three to four times per week to rehearse, even during school vacation week in February.  The repertoire was carefully considered for the world-renowned venue by Dr. Marina Rozenberg, Choir Director at BC High.
