Wheaton Nips Visiting Colby for Fourth Consecutive Victory
Women's tennis wins 5-4.
The Wheaton College women's tennis team turned in a 5-4 victory over visiting Colby College on Sunday afternoon, as the Lyons extended their winning streak to four matches in a contest that started outside at the Clark Tennis Courts and ended inside Beard Field House.
Handing the Mules their first loss of the fall slate, Wheaton improves to 6-1, while Colby slips to 2-1.
The Lyons secured wins in two of three doubles matches to take a 2-1 edge into singles play. Junior Lyndsay Cooke (Bakersfield, Calif./Bakersfield Christian) and sophomore Alexandra Marlowe (Mesa, Ariz./Mountain View) remained undefeated in dual matches following their 8-3 triumph in the top doubles spot.
Juniors Morgan Bell (Gloucester, Mass./Pingree School) and Sarah Crom (Bremen, Germany/International School of Bremen) emerged victorious at second doubles, doubling up their counterparts by an 8-4 count.
Mule seniors Sally Holmes (Prairie Village, Kan./Shawnee Mission East) and Alex McAuliff (Waterville, Maine/Waterville Senior) notched an 8-5 win at third doubles.
In singles action, Cooke and Marlowe handled the opposition in the first and second slots, respectively. Cooke won 6-0, 6-2 at one, while Marlowe blanked her opponent at two.
Crom's match at fourth singles proved to be the difference, as she overcame a one-set deficit to help her team to victory. After dropping a 7-5 decision in the opening set, Crom responded with scores of 6-2 and 6-3 to earn the win.
For the guests, junior Victoria Abel (Carlisle, Mass./Concord-Carlisle Regional), freshman Holly Bogo (East Grand Rapids, Mich./East Grand Rapids) and sophomore Erica Talamo (Newton, Mass./Buckingham, Browne & Nichols)recorded straight-set wins at third, fifth and sixth singles, respectively.
The Lyons return to New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) action on Tuesday when they host defending champion Wellesley College at 4 p.m.
