The Phenomenon Known as Dubstep

Journalism assignment by Norton High School student Kendyl Cutler.

Dubstep is a genre of electronic dance music that has been getting popular. It originated in South London in the early 2000s and was played mostly in dance clubs. DJs that make dubstep music have started to get a lot more recognized.

It’s not wildly popular, but it’s getting there. Radio stations have started slowly releasing it on the air. Popular rap and pop artists have started incorporating it in small amounts as dance breaks in their songs.

It’s more for the young adult age groups from about 15 to late 20s. If you like interesting, robotic sounding, dance music, than you’ll love dubstep.

There are also gatherings and concerts that include not only dubstep, but techno and dance music as well. Concerts and gatherings are the best ways to see your favorite DJs live because at clubs, there are a lot of other things going on all at once. During the concerts, there is usually a section for families to go and there is a section for young adults. Though these concerts and clubs have a bad reputation with experimental drugs, dubstep is not only for those groups of people. There are many different kinds of people that listen to dubstep for the beats and sounds that come with the music.

Dubstep is also not an easy genre of music to DJ. It takes a lot of time and effort. DJs have to spend a lot of time playing around with different sounds and beat. There’s a lot to know about new technology when it comes to dubstep as well.

Overall, dubstep is an intense, fun genre of music that people of this century are now starting to enjoy more frequently.

Don't forget to mention all the software that let beginners try out making dubstep. I just started making my own tunes (with Dr Drum http://beatartisan.com/review/dr-drum/) and I'm sure there are other programs out there aswell. Sure, the production quality can't match a real studio, but it's a nice way to learn and have fun :D

This is nothing really new. Back in the 90's it was huge with the computer demo scene. A tool called scream tracker was used.
