Southeastern Regional Cabinetmaking Shop Student Thinks Outside the Box
Norton resident Adam Jurgilewicz to enter desk in woodworking competition.
When Norton resident Adam Jurgilewicz selected the Cabinetmaking Shop at Southeastern Regional, he knew he would have the opportunity to choose from a large selection of projects. But he chose to go beyond the usual student desk project, and as a result may enter his quality roll top desk in the New England Student Woodworking Design Competition in May of 2012.
Jurgilewicz's desk is made of solid oak, complete with 17 pigeon holes and dovetail drawers. With raised panels and finished on all four sides, placement of the desk isn’t limited to being against a wall; it’s suitable as the centerpiece of a room. He estimates the 33” deep, 62” long and 52” high desk should be stained and finished by mid to late February. After the competition, he will use it as his own personal desk.
Jurgilewicz's shop teachers, Mr. Bessette, Mr. Markt and Mr. Perry, describe him as a hardworking and focused 11th grader with a strong work ethic. With another full year ahead of him at Southeastern, Jurgilewicz will have more chances to develop and expand his craft.
The Cabinetmaking Shop offers instruction and guidance in furniture making, cabinet fabrication, drafting, finish carpentry, solid surfaces such as Corian countertops, stair building, model making and Lutherie - the craft of making string instruments such as acoustical guitar and ukulele, to name a few. Over the years, students have enjoyed the experience of working on multiple school and community projects such as working on renovations at the high school office, conference room and lobby. Recently, students preserved slabs of Brockton’s historic Liberty Tree, a point on the Underground Railroad, for the Brockton Historical Society.
Southeastern Regional Vocational Technical High School is a public 9-12 vocational high school located in Easton, Massachusetts, serving approximately 1,250 students from the city of Brockton and the towns of East Bridgewater, Easton, Foxborough, Mansfield, Norton, Sharon, Stoughton, and West Bridgewater.
