Principal Profiles: Michael O'Rourke
Q&A with the Norton Middle School principal.
With the first day of school quickly approaching on Wednesday, Sept. 5, kids are starting to think about who they will have for teachers and which friends will share the same classroom. But what about the head honcho at school...the principal? Over the next few weeks, Patch will have a question and answer with Norton Public School principals so that students and their parents can get to know the person in charge. This week we learn about principal Michael O'Rourke of Norton Middle School.
Name: Michael O'Rourke
Age: 62 (until September 12th) Will you be using a young photo of me? (lol)
How long have you worked in the Norton school system, and at what capacities? I’m beginning my 10th year at Norton Middle School. I have been assistant principal at the middle school for seven years and am now beginning my third year as principal.
What is your favorite part of being principal in Norton? My favorite part is working with and interacting with middle school students. Every year, as I get older, the students stay the same age, and each year is filled with new adventures and endless possibilities. It’s exciting and fun! Also, I’m blessed with an outstanding faculty and staff and with supportive parents, which makes our middle school a great place to be principal.
What are your goals for the school this year? One goal….One word…Learning. We want to develop a strong professional learning community for everyone at Norton Middle School.
What is your favorite song? "Stronger," by Kelly Clarkson
What is your favorite movie? Of all time…."One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest" with Jack Nicholson and other greats. For me, nothing seems to be better!
What is your favorite television show? "Modern Family"
What is your favorite hobby? Kayaking, bicycling and taking photographs.
When you were a student, did you always want to become a principal? If not, what did you want to be? I’ve always thought about becoming a lawyer, but I will wait until I retire to apply for law school. As a student in middle school, I wanted to be a power forward with the Celtics… but you never know. I was never one to rush into things.
Tell us something interesting about yourself that students and staff might not know: I still have my motorcycle and bus driver licenses. I hope to use the motorcycle license again in the future and I hope to never use the bus driver license ever again!
