Norton Police And Fire Respond To Explosion In Woods Near S. Worcester Street

Two males stated lit cigarette and can of gunpowder caused the eruption.

 

Two people were injured in a in an explosion at 195 S. Worcester Street Nov. 15.

Michael Fillion, 26, of Norton, had multiple burns on his hands, neck and face. According to the Norton police report, Fillion stated that he and a friend, Shaun Brown, 24, also of Norton, were sitting in his Jeep Wrangler drinking beer in the woods. Fillion stated he lit a cigarette and a can of black powder exploded. Officials did locate a small black can of black powder in the rear of the vehicle.

Brown was located approximately 250 yards southwest of the train tracks to the rear of 195 S. Worcester St. in a heavily wooded area. It also appeared that the subjects had a campfire.

Fillion and Brown were transported to Rhode Island Hospital by Norton Fire Rescue, with second degree burns. The jeep had extensive fire damage to the passenger compartment of the vehicle.

The incident remains under investigation by Norton Police Detective Todd Bramwell and Trooper Tom Berletti of the State Fire Marshall's Office.
