Pedestrian Struck by Vehicle in Crosswalk

Holly Santos transported to hospital, later released.

At 9:04 p.m. Friday night, Norton Police and Fire Departments responded to the intersection of E. Main Street and Howard Street for a report of a pedestrian struck by a vehicle in the crosswalk.

Holly Santos, 20, of Fall River, was struck by a vehicle operated by John Deschenes, 32, of N. Easton, while attempting to cross East Main Street at the crosswalk in front of Wheaton College.  Santos was transported to Rhode Island Hospital by the Norton Fire Department and was later released.

Santos is not a student of Wheaton College, but was visiting.

Deschenes was cited for a crosswalk violation. The incident is under investigation by Patrolman Scott Sweeting.

cars only have to stop for people in a crosswalk if the crosswalk does not have pedestrian lights. If lights are present the pedestrian has to engage the lights before crossing. Motorists do not have to stop for pedestrians in a crosswalk if there is a working light. The light at Howard is confusing for both the motoring public and also the students and staff at Wheaton. This issue should be addressed.
