A Committee is being formed in order to construct a memorial in honor of Master Sergeant Gregory Trent.
Trent, of Norton, died from wounds he sustained in Afghanistan Wednesday, Aug. 8 at Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Maryland. Trent was assigned to the 4th Battalion, 3rd Special Forces Group in Fort Bragg, N.C. His unit was attacked in Baktabad, according to the Department of Defense. He was 38.
Christopher Cox, who went to Norton High School with Trent, heard about his passing and knew he wanted to somehow pay homage to his friend.
“We were pretty close in high school and we stayed in touch later in life through Facebook. When I heard of Greg’s passing it was a real shock. It hit me pretty hard,” Cox said. “I immediately wanted to do something as a community to make sure that Greg’s sacrifice is appropriately honored and recognized.”
A member of the Class of 1992 at Norton High, Oct. 6 would have been Trent’s 20th year reunion.
While his plan is in the very early stages, Cox would like to put together a community project, perhaps in the form of a park with a garden, flagpole and benches.
“A nice place for one to go and not only contemplate and reflect on Greg, but veterans in general,” Cox said.
Before a location is found, however, a committee must be formed with a suggested five to seven members. If there is a great interest, sub committees can be created to further divvy up tasks. Once a committee is established and approved by selectmen, location and funding will be the next hurdles.
“I think this is a very admiral project,” said selectman Robert Kimball.
Michael Johnson, the Veterans Service agent, is in support of the committee and looks to be a liaison between the committee and town hall. Johns also noted that the committee could perhaps be extended beyond the duration of the memorial project to help with other veteran issues.
“This is a great thing for the town,” he said.
