Numbers And Talent Propel Norton Boys Track To Undefeated Mark

Lancers stand at 3-0, but have bigger and better things in mind.

To compete for a Tri-Valley League title, you have to have both talent and depth.

The Norton High boys’ outdoor track team possesses both of those elements, and that has resulted in the Lancers being able to start the season with a perfect 3-0 record.

The Lancers have won their first three meets by at least 30 points. They opened the year with a 108-28 home win over Dover-Sherborn on April 7. Norton then headed to Holliston on April 11 and returned with an 83-53 verdict over the Panthers. It was just the second win ever for Norton over Holliston since the Lancers have been a part of the TVL.

“The kids were pumped up and had a fantastic day,” said Norton coach Kent Taylor.

Norton then improved to 3-0 with a dominant 104-32 effort against Bellingham last Thursday at Adams Field. Senior captain Tim Johansmeyer captured three events and remained undefeated on the season in those three events. He won the triple jump and the long jump as well as the 400 meters. Junior Ben Donovan earned three placements, capturing the 400 hurdles and placing second in both the 110 hurdles and triple jump.

Senior captain Jon Sicard placed in three events, winning the 200 and placing second in both the 100 meters and long jump competitions. Keegan Campbell, also a senior captain, won two events, the high jump and the 800 meters, remaining undefeated in both.

Senior captain Shawn Ferrini won the shot put, while junior Kevin Rogers finished in first place in the mile. Junior Ramzi Bechara won the 110 hurdles and classmate Brian Gannon finished first in the 100 meters. Sophomore Joe Colley captured the javelin competition, while freshman Max Marcotte finished in first place in the two mile.

“I’m not really surprised we are 3-0,” Taylor said. “We have a strong set of seniors, and a strong set of underclassmen. We have great kids, who take a lot of pride in the team.”

Taylor has over 70 athletes on the squad this spring. “A big part of our success has been due to the fact that a lot of kids came out for the team this year,” he said. “We have the biggest boys’ team we have ever had here. It is all about the numbers in track. It really helps. We are very well-balanced and it has taken three or four years to get to this point.”

Norton has five senior captains this spring, including Mike Gillis (distance), Sicard (sprints), Johansmeyer (jumps), Campbell (middle distance) and Ferrini (throws).

Johansmeyer leads the team in points scored with 45, while Campbell is second with 30.5 points. Sicard and Donovan are tied for third with 26 points and Ferrini has 16. Gannon is sixth in points with 15.5, while Rogers (14.25) is seventh and Bechara (14) is eighth. Junior Ryan Lapadula is tied with Marcotte and Colley for ninth in points with 13.

“We have great throwers this year,” Taylor said. “That has been a weakness for us in the past, but we are much improved in that area. We have been able to maintain our success in the jumps and we are balanced on the track.”

The team will look to go to 4-0 when it hosts Medway in a TVL contest next Tuesday at 3:30 p.m. Norton beat the Mustangs 82-53 a year ago on the way to a 5-4 record.

“We are looking forward to a great meet,” Taylor said. “We match up well with them.”

After the meet with Medway, the Lancers will head to Ashland to face the Clockers in a league contest on Thursday, April 28 at 3:30. Norton beat Ashland 107-29 last spring.

“We are taking it one meet at a time right now, but we feel we are a force to be reckoned with in the league this year,” Taylor said.
