Norton Wrestling Bounces Back In Big Way

Lancers get back on track with three wins in Sharon on Saturday.

Following a very difficult setback to Holliston in a key Tri-Valley League meet last Wednesday night, the Norton High wrestling team was looking for a bounce-back performance during its quad meet on Saturday in Sharon.

And as you knew they would, the Lancers responded in a big way, sweeping the meet with victories over the host Eagles as well as Hingham and Somerset.

Norton defeated Hingham (41-31), Sharon (54-24) and Somerset (63-18) to improve its season record to 9-4 overall.

Junior Stefen Winfield (130 pounds) and senior captain Derek Hoyt (140) led the way for the Lancers, registering pins in all three of their matches.

Junior John Royle, bouncing back from a back injury on Wednesday, won all three of his matches at 145 pounds as did junior captain Scott Coleman at 135 pounds and sophomore Jack Cuneo at 160 pounds.

Several Norton wrestlers won two matches on Saturday, including junior captain Brett Gallagher (119 pounds) and classmates Chris White (112), James Cuneo (152) and Matt Pelletier (189). Sophomore Steve Hudson also won a pair of matches at 285 pounds.

Juniors Cam Hale (125 pounds), John Norton (125), Kevin Ceckowski (171) and senior Austin Shute (285) all contributed one victory apiece to the team’s success on Saturday.

Following the meet in Sharon, Norton has 12 of its 14 starters possessing winning records. Coleman continues his tremendous season with a perfect 20-0 mark. White is 7-0, while James Cuneo is 2-0.

Gallagher has a 13-1 record this year with his only loss coming by decision to last year’s All-State champion at 112 pounds, Mike Mui of Hingham. Derek Hoyt is 17-4 with Royle at 16-3. Hudson and Hale both have 15-7 marks, while Jack Cuneo is 14-6 and Winfield is 12-4. John Norton has an 11-4 record, while Pelletier has a mark of 11-8.

Freshman Mike Travers leads the way for the undefeated Norton junior varsity team with a 13-2 record, while sophomore Brett Pike is 12-2. Freshman Tony Giglio has an 11-3 record, while classmate Branden Pike is 10-3. Freshman Myles McAlpine has a mark of 6-3, while junior Jared Marvel is 8-2.

Norton will get back into TVL competition when the team hosts the combined squad from Ashland and Keefe Tech on Wednesday night at the Lawrence Larocque Gymnasium. Following Wednesday’s contest, the Lancers will look to defend their team title at the Canton Tournament on Saturday.

The Norton junior varsity team will compete in a tournament in Reading on Sunday, while the program’s talented group of freshmen will head to Brookline for a tournament next Monday.
