Nine Wins for Norton High Wrestling Team
The Norton High wrestling team added three more victories to their total this year.
The Norton High wrestlers left no doubt in anyone's mind that they are a team to reckon with this season, beating Wakefield, last year's D-3 North Sectional Champs, 55-15, a solid Georgetown team, 58-22, and Triton Regional, the 2011 D-3 State Champs, 43-30.
The sweep at Wakefield improves the Lancers to 9-1 as they prepare for the 33 team Marshfield Holiday Tournament later this week.
Norton finished second last year, just behind D-2 State Champs North Andover.
The Lancers dominated the meet with Wakefield from start to finish winning 11 of 14 matches with pins by Ahrayah Saintius, Russell Hansen, Jack Cuneo, Elliott Johnson, Tim Casagni and Stephen Hudson. Decisions were by JT Taylor, Myles McAlpine and Mike Travers, a major decision by Aidan Kahn and a forfeit to Deven Schuko rounded out the scoring against the Warriors.
Georgetown, a new opponent for Norton this season, jumped out to an 18-6 lead early, but the Lancers came roaring back winning nine of the next 10 matches to outpace the Royals 58-22.
Schuko again took a forfeit, as did Hudson. McAlpine won a major decision and Brett Pike, Taylor, Cuneo, Johnson, Travers, Casagni and Kahn all pinned their men.
Finally, in a showdown between the 2011 and the 2012 D-3 State Champs, Norton fought off a strong Triton team to win, 43-30.
The Vikings won the first four matches, three by pin, to take a 21-0 lead only to see the Lancers win eight of the last 10 bouts to earn another hard-fought victory.
Close decisions by Taylor and Kahn, pins by McAlpine, Travers, and Casagni, along with forfeits to Johnson, Cardone and Hudson made the comeback possible.
The JV Lancers had a tough day, however, with Adrian Sokolowski the only winner in the nine official matches wrestled against an experienced Triton team.
The varsity team returns to action on Thursday and Friday at the Marshfield Holiday Tournament. The JVs compete in their own tournament at Marshfield on Saturday.
