Lynch calls for investigation into FBI's involvement with Bulger

As James "Whitey" Bulger prepared to face charges in U.S. District Court in Boston Friday afternoon, including for the killing of 19 people, Easton's U.S. congressman called on the Justice Department to examine the FBI's involvement with the notorious crime boss.

"With the capture of Mr. Bulger, my hope is that this will bring some closure for the families of the victims," Rep. Stephen Lynch (D-MA) said in a statement. "There may also be an opportunity to gain additional information regarding the FBI's involvement in these crimes. It remains the responsibility of the Justice Department to see that a full investigation is completed."

Bulger, who was , worked as an informant for the Federal Bureau of Investigation before his many years on the run with companion Catherine Greig. John J. Connolly, Jr., a former FBI agent, is now in federal prison after racketeering and obstruction of justice convictions stemming from his involvement with Bulger and the Winter Hill Gang.

Bulger had been wanted for at least 19 murders that occurred in the 1970s and 80s in connection "with his leadership of an organized crime group that allegedly controlled extortion, drug deals, and other illegal activities in the Boston [area]," according to the FBI.

Bulger and Greig were arrested without incident, according to the FBI. Previously, the FBI had said that Bulger was considered to be armed and dangerous. "He has a violent temper and is known to carry a knife at all times," the FBI said.
