Fenway Celebrates 100 Years: Share Your Stories and Photos

Norton Patch editor shares her first memory of the park.

Fenway Park opened on April 20, 1912. My own memories of the historic ballpark began around 1989 or so when my parents brought me to my first Red Sox game. Of course, being only 6 years old, I couldn't see very much of the game. Then again, I can't see very much of the game at 29 unless I pay big bucks for the seats behind home plate. But that's another story.

I recall sitting with my parents, so wrapped up in the game even though I had no clue what was going on. I just kept shouting over and over, "Hit the ball! Hit the ball!" At first I bet it was really cute. But then I'd have to imagine it got really annoying and my parents were starting to get dirty looks after a while. They eventually told me that the other team was up at bat. So I thought about it for about 30 seconds before I started chanting, "Throw the ball! Throw the ball!"

Though I had no idea who was up at bat, what the score was or even how the game was played at that age, it is one of my fondest (and earliest) memories. Even now when I cough up the money to attend a game, I am always thinking about that first time. Especially when I go the cheap route and stick with the nosebleed seats behind a large support beam and can't see a thing.

Whether you are in the camp of supporting a new Red Sox ballpark that is more viewer friendly or against the idea because of nostalgia, one thing is for certain. Fenway is a historical aspect of Boston and is admired across the United States. Even my friend from Wisconsin has a visit to the park on her bucket list.

This park belongs in Boston, either with updated construction for games or as a museum. One way or another, I hope it is around in another 100 years.
