Bus Stop Safety

This week's Parent Talk topic.

Each week, our council of experts and smart parents take your questions, give advice and share solutions in this parenting column. This feature will also be the place to drop in for a talk about the latest parenting hot topic.

So grab a cup of coffee and settle in as we start the conversation today with a topic and question:

The school bus stop is always a tricky subject. On one hand, you don't want to embarass your child by waiting with them until they get their license, but on the other you worry about bullies, kidnapping and general bad behavior. At what age should kids be allowed to wait for the bus without parental supervision? How do you ensure their safety?

Please comment in the box below, and check Norton Patch every Wednesday at 1 p.m. for this segment.

You can never be too careful... but you don't want to 'cramp their style'. It's so important to stress stranger-danger and beware of bullies. Back in the day... my friends and I walked to school alone starting in 1st grade! If there are a few kids at the stop that get along I think middle school would be okay. But if they are alone I'd stay with them at the bus stop until high school! Even just standing from a distance so you know they are safe.
