1. History blurb behind Small Business Saturday
Today is Small Business Saturday. It is a day for everyone to support the small businesses that their community thrives on. American Express founded the day in 2010 to help small businesses get exposure during the holiday season, when they might be otherwise overlooked.
2. State Reps. call for Small Business Weekend
Massachusetts State Representatives have taken SBS a step further. Representatives Jay Barrows (R-Mansfield), Stephen Howitt (R-Seekonk) and Betty Poirier (R-Attleboro) - members of the Small Business Caucus - co-sponsored the House Resolution establishing the Small Business Weekend. The resolution is intended to recognize the integral role small businesses play in shaping our economy, commend the positive impacts of small business in our communities, and to encourage shopping at local businesses on “Main Street.” To see where you can shop locally in Norton, check out our directory.
3. The first Small Business Caucus
The first ever Small Business Caucus at the State House was founded in 2011 in order to foster a more business-friendly climate in the Commonwealth. Chaired by Representative Shaunna O’Connell, the caucus has been working with legislative members and industry experts on issues such as mandates, regulations, health insurance costs and tax burden.
4. Small Business Saturday stats
An estimated 103 million Americans shopped locally on Small Business Saturday last year, exceeding the pre-Thanksgiving projection of 89 million shoppers. According to statistics released by American Express, small-business merchants experienced a 23 percent increase in card-member transactions on the second annual Small Business Saturday, held on Nov. 26, 2011.
