Elizabeth DeFanti Wins Foxborough Regional Charter School Geographic Bee Moves One Step Closer to $25,000 College Scholarship
Elizabeth DeFanti of Norton, a Grade 8 student at Foxborough Regional Charter School won the school-level competition of the National Geographic Bee on Wednesday, January 9th, 2013 and a chance at a $25,000 college scholarship. The school-level Bee, at which students answered oral questions on geography, was the first round in the 25th annual National Geographic Bee, the top 100 local winners will compete in the state Bee April 5, 2013.
Elizabeth faced Naman Madan in the championship round, each had to answer three questions. Elizabeth answered all three questions correctly; Naman’s answered two correctly. Elizabeth took home the gold medal by knowing the answer to the following question: “the Yaghan were a nomadic tribe indigenous to Tierra del Fuego, an island group that is divided between Argentina and what other country?” (Answer: Chile).
Other contestants included fifth graders Evan Coyne and Isabella Herman; sixth graders Megan McFarland and Alexander Demirs; seventh graders Jack Clayton, Jack McNeill, Naman Madan (runner up) and Arlyss Milne (runner up); and eighth grader Nora Kingman.
The National Geographic Society will provide an all-expenses-paid trip to Washington, D.C., for state champions and teacher-escorts to participate in the Bee national championship rounds May 20-22, 2013. The first-place national winner will receive a $25,000 college scholarship, a lifetime membership in the Society, and a trip to the Galapagos Islands, courtesy of Lindblad Expeditions and National Geographic (visit www.expeditions.com).
“Jeopardy!” host Alex Trebek will moderate the national finals on May 22. The program will air on television. Check local listings for dates and times.
